Purchasing hardwood lumber is very different from purchasing construction lumber. Note that Hardwood Lumber is a botanical term and is not related to the relative hardness of the wood. Hardwoods shed their leaves in the fall. Softwoods are evergreen. That is a general rule, and there are exceptions. Note also that Balsa and Basswood are classified as Hardwoods.

See Wikipedia for more detail on terms, definitions, and practices involved in purchasing hardwoods in the US.
Commercial Sources for Wood
Purchasing hardwood lumber is very different from purchasing construction lumber. Note that Hardwood Lumber is a botanical term and is not related to the relative hardness of the wood. Hardwoods shed their leaves in the fall. Softwoods are evergreen. That is a general rule, and there are exceptions. Note also that Balsa and Basswood are classified as Hardwoods.

See Wikipedia for more detail on terms definitions and practices involved in purchasing hardwoods in the US.

The shopbot is a wood CNC router in the woodshop. We have been teaching introductory classes to the Shopbot and CNC on roughly a monthly basis. Look at the calendar for classes. These are limited in size, and we split into 2 groups to get hands on, each covering the shopbot and one of the two software packages that's being used.

Note, that like everything in the woodshop, use of the Shopbot requires that you be authorized to use the woodshop, via the class.

Software
There are several ways to generate the g-code required for LinuxCNC to use the shopbot.

For very simple applications: http://easel.inventables.com/

For more advanced: http://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/overview

Problems
One problem that has been encountered is that due to trying to keep the feed rate up, the motion planner will cut some corners. To prevent this add the line to your program: "G64 P0.001". This will tell it to keep deviations to less than 0.001 units (mm or in), while still attempting to keep the speed up as much as possible. You can use a higher value if you want to. See here for a more complete discussion as to why that happens: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.6/html/common/User_Concepts.html
About James
James crashed on this planet during the cretaceous period due to an accident with a hot cup of coffee. Some believe he was partially responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs, The evolvement of man, and the invention of time travel (which hasn't happened yet.) He is one of the few creatures who are actually more dangerous when bored then when threatened and cornered. As of this writing he holds the records for highest voltage measured, and highest voltage electrical shock. However, at different times. This award winning artist and electrical engineer (the normal kind not the award winning kind) is currently the Benevolent Dictator over the Electronics and Rapid Prototyping. His shoot from the hip attitude initially seems irresponsible, but generally isn't. He is quite approachable, however elusive. His interests range from analogue circuits (entire frequency spectrum), programming, optics, lasers, High Voltage, woodworking, and organic chemistry. He won best of show at the WSU photography competition, due to his original style and use of GIMP. He has a blogspot blog Hipcat's Pad and goes through occasional bouts of updating it. He quotes a lot of pop culture so you may not have seen that movie. Note: Any pun thread James starts is a direct result of Dominic Canare, so please place blame accordingly.
How to use
* Directions on how to use it
Once you have the application installed on your computer open it. You will have to log in using your MakeICT.org account. Under the heading there are three choices: Start with a Preset , Copy Existing , and Start from Scratch. The Start with Preset allows you to choose from three profiles: Certification, Workshop, and Class. The Copy Existing allows you to duplicate one of the last several events that were posted. The Start from Scratch gives you a clean default form.
If the person requesting to host an event has filled out the Workshop Proposal Form you should have all the information you need to post the event with exception of a picture to use for the facebook event page. Now your ready to enter the basic information. The name of the event should be brief but informative and should include the name of the presenter. If the event is generic, like a safety class, the name of the presenter is not necessary. If the location is at MakeICT put 1500 E. Douglas in the location field. The description of the event can be taken from the Workshop Proposal (Response) form. It should give details about what the attendee should expect to experience at the event. It should also indicate whether they should bring special materials and if they need to be authorized in a certain area. Simply adding Required authorizations: Woodshop at the bottom of the description will set a flag in the registration to tell the person they need to attend the safety class first.
As they say timing is everything. Enter the date and time of the event. The RSVP settings dictate the cost for members and non-members.
Then in the Cross Posting area you can un-check any of the media check boxes if you do not want that type of post. Otherwise hit Create! and watch the magic happen. Windows will open, you will need to sign in to Wild Apricot, facebook, and Meetup but all the information will be fill out for you. When it's done the windows are left open for you to double check and publish. In the Meetup window scroll to the bottom and click Announce. In the calendar window click on Rooms. ect and choose any rooms or resources that are needed for the event. Then save and close. In the facebook page click Publish.
Close all windows.
Your done. Wasn't that easy :( Well it's better than the old way. Thanks to Dominic Canare for this really helpful tool.
General Information
MakeICT's Electronics and Rapid Prototyping lab is an enclosed 200 sq ft area. This area has several dedicated spaces. One is for creation of electronics, including a board milling machine, area dedicated for assembly, and reflow oven. Another is for the troubleshooting of electronics, including a hot air rework station, Spectrum Analyzer, Oscilloscope, current limited power supply, and logic analyzer. We have a pair of CNC machines fully capable of handling wood, and some aluminum. We offer Dremmel sets to handle less delicate work (or more delicate depending on your skill.) We also have systems one can check out for the learning of electronics, toolsets to fix and repair, as well as Chip programmers, a bus pirate, Raspberry Pis, Arduinos, even a pic based USB module. We offer a full components library, resplendent with analogue devices, TTL type logic, some rare chipsets, and a full complement of passives. The hackables library is also located here. Here is where you may find the inspiration and starting point for your next blue ribbon hack. This lab is dedicated to creating and debugging electronics, as well as some rapid prototyping capabilities. Never a room to be bored in, the common complaint in this room is, "what do I make first?"

Equipment Access Policy
THIS POLICY IS NOT YET APPROVED OR OFFICIAL

We prefer a solid understanding of the equipment you are using before use. Certain pieces of equipment are expensive and not easily repaired. Some pieces of equipment can seriously injure or kill you. It never hurts to run what your doing by someone. There are some dangerous pieces of equipment that can burn mutilate or electrocute. These require peer certification, for the user's safety. SAFE OPERATION of equipment is top priority.

To protect members, any project that exceeds 50V must be clearly labeled "DANGER HIGH VOLTAGE" and will not be left powered up unattended unless wiring is inaccessible to accidental contact. Additionally, the building power panel located on the north wall is considered off limits to members unless they are board appointed personnel. When in doubt, ask.

We strongly suggest that while machining tools are in operation, anyone entering that part of the shop use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, hearing protection, and hand protection.

Finally, is HIGHLY recommended that we use a buddy system, where no single person is working in the shop without a second person in the building so that if there is an injury, somebody else is there to call for help or assist you.

Borrowing Items
Currently we do not lend out equipment, but as we build up an inventory of certain items, we may allow checkout similar to a library. Special arrangements may be made on a individual basis, but that is entirely up to the BD.

Items for Purchase
We do have certain items for sale. Sales should be considered final, the money goes back into the ERP Lab.

Hackables Policy
Items donated to the space with the intent of being hacked (or reused in a way that it was not originally intended) should be placed on the middle shelf that is labeled "HACKABLES" by the back door. If there is no room on the shelf try rearranging things to make it fit. If that's not possible please take your items home until some space gets cleared out on the shelf. Every two weeks or as needed a message will be posted on the group list that the shelf will be cleared. Any items on the Hackables shelf are up for grabs by any member. If you just need a part out of a hackable you don't have to take the whole thing. Just place the remainder back on the shelf for someone else to hack. But if there's really nothing good left in it please throw it away.Items that are considered to have long term hackable value can be moved to other work areas with permission of the areaBD. For instance circuit boards that have parts on them that are generally good for circuit building projects can be moved to the ERP area hackables shelves.
The ERP lab BD maintains the hackables inventory. Hackables are up for grabs and may be removed from the shelves at any time. Any questions about hackables can be refereed to the current BD.

Component Library
MakeICT maintains an electronics library. There is currently an inventory of available active components. This inventory is maintained by volunteers, we ask that you record components you are removing or adding on the clipboard, so that they can be included/subtracted from the inventory. Inventory management is to help the membership, and must rely on the membership. Components in the library are for member use, We only ask you put a buck or two in the donation bucket if you use a lot of them, or some of the rare/complex parts.

Many of our devices come from dubious sources, MakeICT makes no claim as to their datasheet capabilities, and a certain amount of derateing may be required.

Classes
* Basic Electronics Workshop
* Circuit Design and Fabrication
* Rapid Prorotyping with CNC
* Basic Soldering Class

Scopes
MakeICT has a few Oscilloscopes. Most notably is the Tektronix 465B We are fortunate to have some nice ones. Using the Oscilloscope takes some finesse and it's best you have some help with it if you're fairly new to one, so we require certification. The Oscilloscope shows Voltage over time, similar to a graph. There is lots of settings, dials, and switches. if you want to learn to use it just ask to be taught from a reasonably knowledgeable member.
* List of known Scope users is listed below
**Tom McGuire
**James Seymour

Spectrum Analyzer
We have a very nice Spectrum Analyzer (Tektronix 492 AP). The Spectrum Analyzer shows receive power over frequency. So if you set it properly you would see Peaks where each Wifi network is transmitting. It is easy (and expensive) to damage the input of a Spectrum Analyzer. We ask you are certified and use proper caution. We have several attenuators available for impedance matching, so use them.
* List of known analyzer users is listed below
**James Seymour

Circuit Design and Fabrication
Use of the Board Goblin-Circuit Board Mill and or SMD Circuit Work Station requires attendance in the Circuit Design and Fabrication or certification from an approved peer-certifier. We do not mind if your circuit doesn't work, we do mind if our equipment doesn't.
* Any member who has been certified to use the circuit fabrication equipment may peer-certify other members
* Certification instruction must at least include
** Fundamental knowledge of circuit board milling principles
** Fundamental knowledge of soldering and solder reflow
** Proper use and control of the LinuxCNC software
** Basic circuit design
* Certification must be documented (link to instructions or form) prior to use
* List of circuit fabrication users below
**Tom McGuire

V90 CNC router
Use of the V90 CNC router requires attendance in CNC Router certification workshop
* Certification must be documented (link to instructions or form) prior to use
* List of CNC Router Certified users is listed below
**Tom McGuire

'The Beast' RD-500S II rework Machine
The Beast isn't up and running yet. It requres some TLC and is considered a work in progress. Once operational, it is designed to make short work of SMD replacement, by combining a CNC rework station with an on board reflow process. Operation will be mostly peer Certification.

Electronics and Rapid Prototyping Safety
# Do not use any machine you are not trained on and comfortable using. If at any time you are unsure of what you are doing, stop immediately and ask for help.
# Do not use any machine that is not in good working order. Stop, unplug and leave a note on the machine and notify the BD OR Tom McGuire.
# NEVER ASSUME A TOOL IS PROPERLY ADJUSTED. Always check the tool prior to use.
# NEVER MODIFY OR HACK MACHINERY WITHOUT CONSENT FROM THE AREA BD.
# Always triple check your inputs when connecting to equipment. Dangerous levels are dangerous.
Access Policy
(Approved by the board 2016 December 04)

Those who wish to access the textile room must read and follow the Textile Room Guidelines posted on the Wiki. (The guidelines will likely be updated and evolve over time. Users are expected to review and comply with the current guidelines.) Use of the equipment requires authorization by one of the approved authorizers listed on the wiki.

Textile Room Guidelines
Guidelines will be updated periodically at the discretion of the Textile BD.

The Room
*The Textile Room is a CLEAN SPACE. No food, drinks, or any other messy/dirty/liquidy/greasy substances including yourself are allowed in the room.
In particular, do not place anything besides the clothes iron, clean laundered fabric, pins and notions on the padded work table. If something has been on the floor or anywhere dirty, it should not be on the work surface.
*Put things back where you got them (or put them in their proper place if someone else happened to leave them out).
*Clean up after yourself. (Lint roll the table, sweep, etc)
*Children under 8 are not permitted in the room.

Ironing:
*The padded table is for ironing and pinning projects together. Do not cut fabric on the padded surface.
*Always use the distilled water provided in the Textile Room to fill the irons and spray bottles.
*When using steam you may want to use a barrier fabric to prevent color transfer from the table fabric to your project.

Cutting:
*Do not cut fabric on the padded table. To cut fabric, lower the Murphy Cutting Board so it lays flat on top of the padded work table and only cut on the cutting board itself.
*Textile scissors and shears have been labeled as “Fabric Only” and are only to be used to cut the following Acceptable Fabrics. Do not cut material from the Unacceptable Fabrics list below. If the material you would like to cut is not on either list, ask the Area Lead if it is safe.
Acceptable Fabrics: are woven or felted up to ⅛” thick. Some examples are cotton, linen, wool, cashmere, polyester, rayon/viscose, nylon, spandex, silk, leather...

Unacceptable Fabrics: Some examples are burlap, metallic, kevlar, fur, faux fur, or anything above 12 oz per square yard… (Fur and faux fur are cut from the back side with a straight edge knife or ripped on grain.)

Sewing:
*All our current machines are previously loved and have some quirks. We will try our best to keep information on each machine on the wiki. If you learn something about a machine that is not listed, please let us know.
*If a machine is broken, place a sticky note on the machine and email the Area Lead asap so we can work to get it up and running again.
*Machine needles are available on the honor system for $1 each. Machines will typically be found without a needle. If you take or break one, please deposit the appropriate amount in the Needle Fund jar.
*Long pile furs such as rabbit require a furrier machine which we do not possess at this time.
*If using a fusible web such as Heat and Bond please use silicone on the machine needle to prevent build up while sewing.
The Laser cutter cuts or engraves digital designs on a variety of materials. Laser cutting is a great way to rapidly prototype projects.

A certification workshop, hosted by an approved instructor, is required of all members before using the laser cutter. Workshops are posted on the calendar. Peer certification is not an approved path for use of the laser cutter.

Interfacing with the laser cutter is performed with .

The laser cutter does require regular cleaning and alignment. This is to be performed by trained volunteers only.

Usage
Safety
Laser cutters pose a fire hazard. A high intensity beam of laser light can produce extremely high temperatures as it comes into contact with the materials it is engraving, marking, or cutting. When using the laser cutter, remember:
# You may only use the laser cutter if you have been officially certified according to the machine access policy
# Never leave the laser cutter unattended while it was powered on (even if it is not firing)
# Never cut materials that you don't know are safe
# Never override laser cutter safeties and switches
# Know what to do if a fire happens
## Hint: Hit the big, red, emergency stop button. This will shutdown the laser and the air supply.
## A Carbon Dioxide (CO2) fire extinguisher is located next to the laser cutter

Before starting the laser cutter
# Check the coolant window in the back of the chiller before starting any project.
# Check that the screen in the collection bin is clean and the bin is empty.

After starting the laser cutter
# Before cutting make sure the air compressor and the fan motor are on
# Home the head!
::* If you do not do this, you may crash the head, which is not good.
# Refer to the cutting manual for appropriate engraving and speed and power settings for varied materials
# Beware of flammable materials while using the machines.

Workflow
# Create design or import
If importing, unite lines (under Tools menu)
# Separate layers if necessary (by changing their colors)
# Set layer modes
# Set layer speeds/powers
# Set origin (under Laser menu)
# Download
## Delete all
## Download current
# Load media into cutter
# Focus laser (in center of media)
# Move laser to origin
# Run box / test
# Close lid and start
# After cut is finished allow ~30 seconds before opening to vent smoke/fumes

When Finished
# Home the head
# Remove media and clear debris
# Power off

Common Issues
* Edges of cut pieces are slanted, rather than straight.
::The Laser is out of alignment and needs to be adjusted. Notify the Fab Lab BD.
* The head crashes when approaching the left or bottom of the bed.
::The head must be homed before starting to cut. If it isn't homed there is a risk of crashing the head, which is a bad thing.
* Bed only travels downwards.
::The focus probe is stuck in the triggered position. Wiggle it loose and make sure nothing jammed.
*Focus probe is broken.
::There are spares in the kit in the cabinet on the left-hand side of the laser. When putting a thicker material in the cutter remember to lower the bed before moving the head.
* Fumes are not venting well.
::Make sure that the screen in the collection bin under the bed is clean.
* Unexpectedly wide rotary attachment dimensions
::Machine Options > Worktable > RY axis pulse unit = .018238

Materials
Cutting a bad material in the laser cutter can be dangerous. Only approved materials should be cut, and banned materials should never be placed in or even around the laser cutter. Cutting an unknown material risks bodily harm and damage to equipment/facilities.

Banned materials
These materials should never be processed in the laser cutter.
{| class="wikitable sortable"
|-
! Name !! DANGER !! WARNING
|-
|
ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene)
|| Emits cyanide gas and tends to melt || ABS does not cut well in a laser cutter. It tends to melt rather than vaporize, and has a higher chance of catching on fire and leaving behind melted gooey deposits on the vector cutting grid. It also does not engrave well (again, tends to melt).
|-
|
Chlorinated plastics (PVC/Poly Vinyl Chloride, vinyl/pleather/artificial leather)
|| Emits pure chlorine gas when cut! || Don't ever cut this material as it will ruin the optics, cause the metal of the machine to corrode, and ruin the motion control system. Bubbles yellow, smokes alot, STINKS!!!!!
|-
|
Coated Carbon Fiber
|| Emits noxious fumes || A mix of two materials. Thin carbon fiber mat can be cut, with some fraying - but not when coated
|-
|
Fiberglass
|| Emits fumes || It's a mix of two materials that cant' be cut. Glass (etch, no cut) and epoxy resin (fumes)
|-
|
Galvanized metal
|| Emits dangerous fumes || Zinc fumes are poisonous. Galvanized metal should never be super heated (so don't weld on it either).
|-
|
Metal
|| || Power needed for LASER to cut metal
|-
|
Milk bottles/HDPE
|| Catches fire and melts || It melts, gets gooey. DON'T. Someone has to clean the hex worktable.
|-
|
Mirrored surfaces
|| Will not cut, reflects laser beam || Mirror surfaces can reflect the laser beam, damaging the cutter's interior components. Some mirrored materials can be placed reflective-side down and cut.
|-
|
Polycarbonate/Lexan
|| Cut very poorly, disbackground-color, catch fire || Polycarbonate is often found as flat, sheet material. The window of the laser cutter is made of Polycarbonate because polycarbonate strongly absorbs infrared radiation! This is the frequency of light the laser cutter uses to cut materials, so it is very ineffective at cutting polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is a poor choice for laser cutting.
|-
|
PolyPropylene Foam
|| Catches fire || Like PolyStyrene, it melts, catches fire, and the melted drops continue to burn and turn into rock-hard drips and pebbles.
|-
|
PolyStyrene Foam
|| Catches fire || Like PolyPropylene. It catches fire, it melts, and only thin pieces cut. This is the #1 material that causes laser fires!!!
|-
|
Pressure treated wood
|| Emits dangerous fumes || Should never be burned -- not in your fireplace, and definitely not in our LASER
|-
|
Printed circuit board (FR4 and other material types)
|| ||
