#Do not use any machine that is not in good working order. unplug The equipment, leave a note on the machine and notify the metalshop Lead-
#Always check tools prior to use.
#Wear safety glasses at all times when tools are in use in the shop area.
#Ear protection is recommended
#No open-toed shoes or loose clothing
#Remove objects on hands and wrists
#Remove dangly necklaces and earrings
#Restrain long hair to prevent entanglement
#Do not leave machines running unattended.
#Never talk to or disturb anyone operating power tools, forge or welding equipment. If you must talk to an operator wait until the operator finishes the operation.
#Be aware of the work going on around you.
#Wear proper PPE (personal protective equipment) Safety glasses welding sleeves, grinding shields etc.
#Unplug/turn off the air compressor when not in use
#All safety guards must be kept in place while operating equipment. If a guard or safety device is an impediment to safe operation of a machine - ask for help.
#Use equipment only for its intended use.
#If you have made an adjustment to a piece of equipment, return it to its normal position after you are done.
#All guests are the responsibility of the member. Guests are NOT allowed to use equipment. Children under 8 years old are not allowed for safety.

Machine shop Specific Safety
#This includes all mills and lathes in the metalshop.
#Lead authorized certification is required to operate this equipment. This can be as easy as showing the Lead or peer the proper use of said equipment and describing experience.
#Due to the high level of technical understanding and cost of the Tormach CNC mill, extensive training will be required before use.

Welding shop Specific Safety
#Use the proper face shield when grinding and a welding helmet when welding.
#Closed-toed shoes.
#Wear the appropriate glove while welding.
#We suggest you wear ear protection to prevent sparks from entering your ear canal.
#NEVER weld on or near anything that's been cleaned with a chlorinated hydrocarbon like brake-cleaner. When combined with UV light, chlorinated hydrocarbons can create phosgene gas, which can cause serious injury or death. Ventilation will not prevent poisoning.
#No galvanized (zinc plated) material should be welded without removal of the galvanized coating near the weld zone to protect from poison gas release.

Minor maker safety committee

The following is the submitted suggestion by the Minor Making Safety Committee to the board on Feb 7th, 2023. The policy was rejected by board vote at the February 16th 2023 board meeting.

The committee would like to communicate our concerns to the board and recommend badge access not be granted to anyone under 18 in the future.

There are rules around minors that are being broken and we feel we need more rules to protect children as well as the organization. The membership committee has clarified that everyone under 16 must be treated as a guest and their host must be in the room with them at all times. Membership says they will clarify their wording, but this must be relayed to membership. This information should be relayed to 3 parents in particular with complaints.

We also fear for the safety of children in the space which is a concern shared by the state. The Kansas supreme court (case gerchberg-v-loney) describes tort liability as it applies to the attractive nuisance doctrine. Basically, if we expect minors to be present, we must make our equipment safe from them being able to use it and accidentally hurting themselves. If a minor was hurt on equipment that a reasonable person would think could hurt a child, then we would be liable. We looked into what our insurance covers, which is $1000 medical expense limit for any one person. We have coverage against lawsuit, but that is less clear.

We are also concerned with minors breaking laws at the space (which has already happened). If we allow minors to break laws at the space, we could lose our ability to do business.

We also have concerns about minors (16 & 17 year olds) bringing guests. We are dropping that concern, because we are recommending we stop granting new badge access to anyone under 18. We feel that the risks to minors and to the organization are not acceptable. We feel that no one at makeict would want to allow an environment that ultimately led to a child being hurt.

Some members on the forum are concerned about censoring art for a younger audience. Many more members and this committee are against censorship. If all minors are treated as a guest, then their host would be responsible for what they showed their guest.

The committee also pondered possible additional benefits to incentivise continued minor membership without badge access and all agree that a good idea would be to give minors a $25 a month (non roll over) credit to be used for classes in addition to their member discount.

A final request of the committee is that IT make a system so that waivers could be searched and verified without creating a class.

Please vote whether we should continues giving badge access to minors.

Sorry, to be clear the change requested for vote by the minor maker safety committee is as follows.
Standing rules: section on membership “Minors under the age of 16 need to be accompanied by an adult whenever at the space. Keys are available to members over the age of 16, following the key policy.”
Changed to:

“Minors need to be accompanied by an adult whenever at the space. Keys are available to members 18 and older, following the key policy. Minor members with badge access before 1-1-23 will retain adult privileges.”

MakeICT is run entirely by volunteers, but it is not always easy to figure out how to get started volunteering here.

We will occasionally run classes on How to Volunteer at MakeICT, but you don't have to go to a class to get started!

Here are a few ways you can start doing very small things that really help the makerspace:

*Take out the trash: Grab a trash bag from the Janitorial closet when you come in the building and take the trash out as you exit. The dumpster is on your right as you leave the building!
*Sweep the floor: On any floor except ceramics, just grab a broom and dust pan from the main janitorial closet or a shop vac from the other janitorial closet and go to town. Please put the equipment back so the next guy has a chance to volunteer. (Check with the ceramics lead before doing any sweeping in there as the dust can be hazardous.)
*Mop the floor: See a spot where someone didn't clean up a spill or a floor that is just filthy? Do a sweep job and then grab a mop and bucket from the janitorial closet and do it. If you have never used a mop like that before, it is pretty easy... the janitorial closet has a hose on the faucet that will allow you to fill the bucket. (It is easier if it is less than half full.) Then dip the mop in the water and place the mophead in the wringer and squeeze most of the water out. Mop. Repeat. Dump the water and hang the mop when you are done.
*Tidy: Look for things that you know where they go and put them back in that location. If you are not sure where they go, place them neatly together so the next person that comes in can put them back if he/she knows. (If you know where things go, grab a label maker from the office and label it so the next person can put things away!)
*Wipe down/Dust: Grab a rag from the janitorial closet and dampen it. Clean off shelves and counters that look dusty and dirty.
*Replace soap. toilet paper and paper towels: Check to see if the bathrooms are stocked. Soap, Toilet paper and paper towels should be in the janitorial closet. There are also the keys there to open the dispensers.

A great way to break into volunteering is to help the Membership Committee email: membership@makeict.org for more info.

*Help people get checked in on a Maker Monday.
*Shadow a tour guide on Maker Monday and become one when you are ready. It is a super fun job showing off the maker space.
*Attend an Orientation as a signer. This is pretty cool because it lets you get to know some of the new people joining the maker space. It is super easy... just listen to the people that are new and if you are feeling brave ask them a question!
*
*

Another way to get started is to work an Event with the Education and Events Committee. Email: events@makeict.org for more info:

*Help with the Renaissance Festival: (You may also have a table in the tent for selling your wares.)
**Help put up a tent.
**Be on the Ballista firing team.
**Explain MakeICT to people who wander in
**Laser cut the catapults we give away freely to children who come into our tent
**Help children build and/or fire catapults at a target
*ComicCon
*Riverfest
*Makerfaire
*Cardboard Regatta
*Halloween
**Halloween Party: Help plan and coordinate. Pumpkin carving. Costume contest.
**Other Halloween event: We haven't had one yet, but much talk about Haunted House and Trunk or Treat...

A great summertime activity that you can volunteer for is lawn maintenance. Email: facilities@makeict.org for more info:

*Mow the Lawn
*#Sign up for a mowing slot on the board across from the Welcome Center. If you forget, sign up afterward so we know it has been done.
*#Post a message on the forum to encourage others to join you!
*#Bring your riding lawn mower and mow the yard... or hop on ours and do it! (It takes about 3 hours with ours)
*#*DO NOT mow inside the courtyard area as that area is maintained by the Garden folks. They are also taking care of the area along the fence.
*#*We do mow the South side up to the fence as well as the far West side from the garden/blacktop/building to the trees.

*Pick up sticks and rocks and other debris that will slow down the lawnmowers
*Use a trimmer around the space to get weeds that accumulate around the building
*Use an edger along the sidewalks
Check with an area lead to see if they have a list of things that need to be done in their area.

*Some of the areas have a list of things that need to be done
*If an area lead doesn't have a list, offer to help them make a list.

*Ask your area lead if you can be their right hand help or if it would be helpful for you to take over a particular subarea.

(Equipment that is needed in the Facilities storage area (garage) by the garage door.)
Visit http://makeict.org/volunteer to see our latest opportunities!

Access Policy
Textile Room Guidelines
Guidelines will be updated periodically at the discretion of the Textiles Area Lead.

The Room

*The Textile Room is a CLEAN SPACE. Please be thoughtful of food and drink inside the area, preferably drinks with lids and food without lots of liquid. In particular, do not place anything besides the clothes iron, clean laundered fabric, pins and notions on the padded work table. If something has been on the floor or anywhere dirty, it should not be on the work surface.
*Put things back where you got them (or put them in their proper place if someone else happened to leave them out).
*Clean up after yourself. (Lint roll the table, sweep, etc)
*Children under 6 are not permitted to use the equipment and must be supervised.

Ironing:

*The padded table is for cutting, ironing, and pinning projects together
*Always use the distilled water provided in the Textile Room to fill the irons and spray bottles.

Cutting:

*Use only scissors, shears or fabric rotary cutters on the cutting mat, it is not made for leather. Use a light touch when using a rotary cutter. Do not use a box/utility knife on the cutting mat.
*Textile scissors and shears have been labeled as “Fabric Only” or "leather scissors" and are only to be used to cut the following Acceptable Fabrics. Do not cut material from the Unacceptable Fabrics list below. If the material you would like to cut is not on either list, ask the Area Lead if it is safe.

Acceptable Fabrics: are woven or felted up to ⅛” thick. Some examples are cotton, linen, wool, cashmere, polyester, rayon/viscose, nylon, spandex, silk, leather...

Unacceptable Fabrics: Some examples are heavy metallic, kevlar, fur, faux fur, or anything above 15 oz per square yard… (Fur and faux fur are cut from the back side with a straight edge knife or ripped on grain.)...

*You may use the sergers, authorization is only for changing the thread or repair and upkeep.
*Home sergers only have size 11 and 14 needles please stick to fabrics in those ranges that ravel on the edge. NEEDLE CHART

Sewing:

*We have a variety of sewing machines available. The current machines used for outside classes are Brother cs-6000i and you can find a link to a video in the equipment list. There is alway one of these machines let up and ready to use. Others are "older heavy duty standard" type machines.
*If a machine is broken, place a sticky note on the machine and email textiles@makeict.org asap so we can work to get it up and running again.
*Machine needles are available on the honor system. If you take or break one, please deposit $1.00 in the Donations box.
*Long pile furs such as rabbit require a furrier machine which we do not possess at this time.
*If using a fusible web such as Heat and Bond please use silicone on the machine needle to prevent build up while sewing and a Teflon sheet when ironing.
