Metalshop Meetup March 1at 2024
Attendees:
Larry Meeks Toni Burt Steve Straight Rustin Atkeisson Adam Denton James Lancaster Tricia Cortes
Purpose of the meeting:
- Discuss how to make the metalshop safer, cleaner and more usable
- Discuss future classes for the metalshop
Making the Metalshop safer, cleaner and more usable
- Scrap Metal (Safer and More Usable)
- The 50 gallon plastic drum was a nice idea but makes it diifcult to get to the scrap at the bottom
- Larry has now ripped 5 pairs of jeans in the process of trying to find metal in the barrel
- All scrap metal in the shop is being taken out and recycled regardless of size and plan on finding a shallower recycling bin
- Powder coating booth (Cleaner)
- It’s being left a mess
- Really need people to clean up after use of the booth
- Keeping it clean makes it easier to recycle powders, especially ones individuals bring in for projects
Future Classes
- Small Plasma cutter demo
- Larry went through a a demo of how to use the small Hypertherm 30 handheld plasma cutter
- Sand Blaster classes
- The big sandblaster will take an authorization class
- The filters will need to be inspected and potentially cleaned before use
- equipment is being moved around to make it easier to get to the access doors for the filters on the sand blaster
- Wind Chimes
- Rustin demonstrated model showing the thoughts and considerations that go into making a nice sounding wind chime
- Toni requested looking into how to make the wind chimes sound spooky for Halloween
- Follow up: unresolved and diminished are often used for 'spooky' or 'creepy' sounding melodies, ex: C, D, Eb, F, Gb, Ab, A, B, C
Bike Rack
-Looking at something more artistic then just utilitarian -There is some concern of needing a permit, but since this is 100% on private property, a permit should not be needed -Might be able to get a couple people involved to make the rack -Need to coordinate with facilities since this would be a permanent structure -Need to coordinate with Kim with Bike Walk Wichita -Need to know how many bikes we would need to fit -Need to figure out where to put it
