MakeICT is operated entirely by member-volunteers, so there are many ways that you can be involved with MakeICT at whatever level you're looking for.

Around the makerspace

Here's a list of tasks that need to be done around the makerspace

Shared areas / general

  • Mount whiteboards
  • Make a plumbing plan (including bathroom, kitchen sink, utility sink)
  • Classroom
    • Connect audio equipment
    • Install light switch in storage room
    • Re-ballast the light fixtures; the only bulbs not working are due to bad ballasts, not bad bulbs.
    • Mount the pull-down extension cords. We will need longer pigtails and some way to reinforce the tiles to mount them OR mount them back to the ceiling and cut holes in the tiles and reinforce with grommets.
    • The Door. Cut the opening a few inches higher, get down to Hopper glass and buy a right and left set of Vistawall-style commercial offset pivots.
    • Trim in the hall and classroom
    • Wash the projector screen, cut trim for the edges and paint black, remount.
    • Set up the photobooth and Creative workstations. This is a bigger project. There is a little more electrical wiring that needs to be done (all supplies are purchased), re-route a couple of the classroom Ethernet drops, and build some desks. (https://tinkercad.com/things/ciuFiQzDbTy)
  • Front
    • Hang blinds or curtains in west-window in co-working space
    • Clean and/or refinish desk in store-front
    • Vacuum the floor (Ongoing/Repeating)
    • Dump the trash (Ongoing/Repeating)
  • Gallery (with Jess Bechtelheimer's oversight)
    • Build mobile partitions
    • Install track lighting
    • Install hanger strip on short wall
  • Lounge
    • Mount projector screen in Lounge
    • Hook-up video game systems in lounge
    • Clean bathroom (Ongoing/Repeating)

Ceramics

  • Create access policy

Electronics

  • Sort/dispose hackables (Ongoing/Repeating)
  • Organize room to floor plan
  • Label drawers, bins, tool boxes, shelves, etc
  • Create access policy

  • Need to find trash collection focal for Tuesday evenings.
  • Build small room for air compressor and dust collector for noise reduction.

Leadership committees

Some activities are easier to manage by grouping them together. We've created these volunteer groups, and anyone is invited to help out with them.

Communications Hive

  • Queen bee: Jens Torell
  • Responsible for marketing, maintaining the website, updating the calendar, and social media accounts
  • Volunteer opportunities:
    • Fix/update wiki pages that need attention
    • Create a member directory
    • Finish new website
    • Create an accurate, scaled, interactive map of the makerspace so people cand find things (like a micrometer, light switches, hot glue, trash bags, a screwdriver, fire extinguishers, etc)

Finances and Fundraising

  • Leader: Dustin Richey

  • Let Dustin know if you need any resources for projects and completion.
  • Volunteer opportunities:

Governance

  • Govna: Dominic Canare
  • The governance committee is in charge of the smooth operation of the organization by identifying leadership roles and defining policies.
  • Volunteer opportunities:
    • New member orientation - we do these once per month, and they take about 30 minutes. All you have to do is make sure people sign in and then fill out a waiver. Then you go over the rules (we have a script) and give a tour. It's pretty easy, and it only takes about 30 minutes.

Outreach Gaggle

  • Leader: Barbara Davis
  • Gives MakeICT a presence in various community events, including art fairs, RiverFest, K12 partnerships, etc.
  • Volunteer opportunities: visit the Outreach Gaggle main page for more information.

Special Projects Brigade

  • Leader: Kip Landwehr
  • Art and Tech bus
    • An electric bus that we are converting into a mobile art gallery and educational-activity mobile
    • Contact Barb Davis to find out how you can help
  • Authentication/network file server
    • Allows makerspace members to have a network account which can be used to authenticate to any machine in the makerspace with their customized settings and access to a personal folder on a network file share.
    • Run electrical from breaker box to server rack in the classroom
    • Contact Kip Landwehr to find out how you can help
  • Video security system
