Workshops and classes at MakeICT provide an opportunity for knowledgeable individuals to share what they know. These learning opportunities are separated into five different types.
For a list of upcoming workshops and classes, visit the calendar. If you have an idea for a public class or workshop that you'd like to take or teach, please share it on the forum! For inquiries about private classes, send a message to info@makeict.org.
Contents
Certifications
Certifications provide people with the required knowledge and approval to operate specific pieces of equipment or work in specific areas. For members, this grants them access to that equipment/tool/area. For non-members, this allows them to enroll in future public workshops that make use of those specific tools/equipment.
- Intended audience: members who want to use equipment or non-members who want to take other workshops
- Price for attendees:
- Members: FREE + materials if there are any
- Non-members: $20 + materials if there are any
- Instructors are volunteers
Workshops
Workshops are open to the public for enrollment and for teaching. Instructors are volunteers, and members can attend for free (except for materials). Non-members can attend for $5.
- Intended audience: general public (members + potential new ones) looking for an intro-level experience
- Price for attendees:
- Members: Materials only
- Non-members: $5 facilities fee + materials
- Instructors
- Purchase/handle materials, can submit reimbursement request
- Volunteer their time/knowledge
- Build their reputation/experience by teaching
- MakeICT
- Provides the venue/facilities
- Provides advertising
- Handles registration
- Handles customer service
Classes
Classes provide deeper knowledge/learning from experienced instructors. These are open to the public for enrollment, but instructors need to be experienced/qualified (which can be demonstrated through public workshops).
- Intended audience: general public (members + potential new ones) looking for more specific, advanced, or deeper learning
- Price for attendees:
- Members: class fee only
- Non-members: $5 facilities fee + class fee
- Instructors
- Set the class fee (which should include materials and instruction)
- Purchase/handle/distribute materials
- Keep 75% of class fee revenue
- MakeICT:
- Provides the venue/facilities
- Provides advertising
- Handles registration
- Handles customer service
- Keep 100% of facilities fees + 25% of class fee revenues
Private Classes at the makerspace
These workshops are intended for specific groups and are not open to the public for instruction or enrollment. Groups looking for a private workshop must make an appointment, and instructors are recruited as required.
- Intended audience: homeschoolers, mentorship programs, companies/orgs/clubs (team-building), etc
- Price for the group
- $100 base fee (reduced to $50 for educational groups or other nonprofits with a goal that’s in line with our mission)
- Materials (varies)
- Instructor’s fee (set by instructor)
- Suggested $20/hr, 2 hour minimum
- Includes prep time and class time
- Incentive for makerspace
- Revenue (100% of the base fee)
- New member recruitment
- Incentive for instructors
- Income (100% of the instructor’s fee)
Private Classes at remote sites
These workshops are intended for specific groups and are performed on location or at a remote site. Groups looking for a private workshop at a remote site must make an appointment, and instructors are recruited as required. The requesting group is responsible for securing a venue and any fees associated with it.
- Price for the group
- $50 base fee
- Materials (varies)
- Instructor’s fee (set by instructor)
- Suggested $25/hr, 2 hour minimum
- Includes prep time and instruction time
- Incentive for MakeICT
- Revenue (100% of the base fee)
- Exposure
- Incentive for instructors
- Income (100% of the instructor’s fee)
Compensation for instructors
Instructors who are not volunteering will receive their payments from MakeICT by the 15th day of the following month.
