== Intro to soldering ==

Teach people how to use soldering irons. This is a hands-on activity that requires some 1-on-1 supervision and has make-it-take-it output.

=== Supplies ===

* Soldering irons and sponges - 1 per X participants

* Solder wick - 1 per soldering iron

* Solder spool - 1 per soldering iron

* Helping hands or clamps - 1 per soldering iron

* Work mat (piece of cardboard works fine) - 1 per soldering iron

* Something to solder - 1 per X participant

=== Preparation ===

# Lay out soldering irons and mats

# Plug in and turn on irons so they are ready to go

=== Procedure ===
+
<br />
# Demonstrate how to hold the soldering iron

# Tin the tip (melt a small bit of solder onto the iron tip)

# Press the component to the pad

# Use the iron tip to heat the component and pad

# While holding the iron to the component/pad, melt solder onto the component/tab. Do not melt the solder on the iron

# While still holding the iron to the component/pad, pull the solder away

# Allow the solder to flow around the pad and component

# Pull the iron away

# Clean the tip

# Return the iron to its holder

These will be small kit projects for make'n'take at fairs or expos, and demonstrations less than 20 minutes.
 +
Includes an inventory sheet and instruction sheet (laminated). Stocked with parts to do a number or students. Also consider selling project kits to schools and organizations. This could be something service learning students could help with.

These will be anything that will span multiple days, whether that is a single weekend like a summer camp, or one day a week for several weeks. Each day will build on knowledge and skills from the previous days. These probably won't lend themselves well to "kits" and will likely require a skilled instructor.  It's a given that these will require dedicated classroom space. Also consider involving parents or having classes that teach parents.
