Purpose of the meeting:
- To discuss what big projects could be supported by people from the metalshop.
- Thank you to everyone that attended and showing how awesome MakeICT really is!
Boiler Removal
- The boiler is an old project that could easily benefit from the help of metalshop users.
- Discussion covered best practises to cut through 3/8in thick and thicker metal
- Oxy/Acetylene is great for cutting thick materials and the existing rig can be adjusted to handle 2in plate given the right fuel/air mixture
- Biggest problem with Oxy/Acetylene is that you will burn through a decent sized oxygen tank within an hour
- Plasma will not cut through as thick of material, but the consumables last for hours and are cheap to replace
- Biggest drawback with plasma is that you need a 220v or bigger outlet as well as compressed air to run the machine
- Discussion covered best practises to cut through 3/8in thick and thicker metal
- Test cuts were made with the oxy/acetylene torch to get members more familiar with how to adjust the torches
- Shade 5 hoods and welding gloves were worn during the test cuts
